The 1-0 triumph over the Hammers, as well as a draw and a defeat for Arsenal and Spurs respectivel,y means Ralf Rangnick's side go into the two-week winter break in the Champions League places.
United will be looking over their shoulder, however, as their north London rivals both have games in hand over the Reds following postponements in recent weeks, with the gap separating fourth and seventh just two points.
Mikel Arteta and Antonio Conte's side remain neck and neck as they remain level on points until they both play again at the beginning of February.
