Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has resigned from his role as Ajax chief executive, prompting Reds fans to urge him to return to Old Trafford.
The 52-year-old spent more than a decade behind the scenes at the Dutch club where he made his professional debut. He played more than 300 times for the Amsterdam side, before moving to Juventus and Fulham.
He joined United in the summer of 2005 and became the club's first choice goalkeeper for the next six years. The Dutchman filled the void which had been left by Peter Schmeichel's departure and won the Premier League four times and the Champions League once. However, he has now decided to resign from his position at the Amsterdam Arena. He said: "We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period. "I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.
