A North Manchester businessman is more than £4,000 out of pocket after being taken to court for waste offences. Yahyah Gakembo, owner of Moston Domestic Appliance, has been prosecuted for failing to collect and provide commercial waste information to Manchester council.

Mr Gakembo, of Brendon Avenue, Moston, failed to attend his trial at Manchester magistrates' court, but in his absence was fined £2,640 with £1,390 costs.

Council officers visited the Moston Lane business, which sells and repairs domestic appliances, in May 2019 to check on commercial waste contracts which ensure a business's rubbish is being disposed of safely, but found no contract was in place. Coun Rabnawaz Akbar, executive member for neighbourhoods said: "Every individual and company has a responsibility to dispose of their waste in the correct way. "We make checks to ensure that companies have the correct documentation, and we won't hesitate to act if they are failing in their duty to dispose of their waste responsibly. "This is a good result and is a warning to others to make sure their disposal contracts are correct and up to date."
