A man in China has been arrested for stealing a black swan from a park and making a pot of soup with it, according to reports.

He is said to have been detained after he was caught on CCTV using a wooden stick to knock the bird unconscious before snatching it from a pond in Cui Lake Park.

When officers raided his rented home they are said to have found a pot of half-eaten swan broth in the kitchen. The man, who is known by his surname Wu, claimed he attacked the swan in self-defence as the bird 'pecked him when he was teasing it with a club', Mail Online reports.

The park, which is in Jinhua, east China, has been home to four black swans for nearly four years but on April 29 a worker reported to police that one of the birds was missing.
