A man and two children, aged six and 14, were killed and a woman escaped alive as a car skidded across a road and plunged into a lake.

The tragedy occurred after Ireland was battered by 90mph winds and heavy rain from Storm Ellen, which damaged buildings, uprooted trees and caused flooding.

A garda spokesperson said the car was travelling along a road when the driver lost control and the vehicle plunged down an embankment and into Lough Foyle at Three Trees, Quigley's Point in Donegal around 10.20pm on Thursday.

The driver, a 49-year-old man, and two children in the back seat - a 14-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl were killed, while a 45-year-old woman in the front passenger seat managed to make it out alive, the Irish Mirror reports.
