He was taken to hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. A man in his 20s was arrested in connection with the incident, before being released under investigation.
Police later shared an image of a man they wanted to speak to in connection with the attack. READ MORE: Police called to fight between men armed with knives on south Manchester street In a public appeal for information, Detective Constable Alex Fagelman, of Bury CID, said: "This was a violent attack that we are sure must have been witnessed - any members of the public who have information about the incident should ring police on 0161 856 8185 or 101 and quote log 260-14/04/2022." Officers have confirmed that they have since arrested a 22-year-old man on suspicion of section 18 assault.
After being questioned by detectives, he has been released under investigation. GMP Bury South tweeted: "We've arrested a 22y-o suspect thanks to you sharing images of a man we wanted to speak to after a serious assault in the town centre in the early hours of Thursday. " The suspect's been questioned & released under investigation as we continue to progress our enquiries."
