Kate and Gerry will not give up hope until a body is found, a family friend said. Investigators in Germany believe Madeleine was murdered, with convicted paedophile Christian Brueckner identified as the key suspect.
And last week chief investigator Hans Christian Wolters said "everything points to her being dead." It has left the McCanns in a "state of limbo", but they remain hopeful that their daughter, who was three when she vanished in May 2007, will turn out to be alive.
