The M8 motorway has been closed in both directions for the second time in a matter of hours - after five cars were involved in a pile-up shortly after police had stood down from a prior incident.
Officers were packing up from an earlier report of concern for a person when the crash took place at 2.50pm between Junction 4 and Junction 4A on the eastbound carriageway, between Whitburn and Blackburn.
The road has been closed in both directions following the smash to allow an air ambulance to land - minutes after it was re-opened following the earlier incident.
Traffic Scotland has confirmed that airborne medics are heading to the scene. The traffic network monitor said on Twitter: "Traffic is now being held in BOTH directions on the M8 between J4 and J4A following an earlier collision.
