A busy train line and a stretch of the M62 will be completely closed later this year as part of work to rebuild a key railway bridge.

The line from Manchester to Rochdale will be closed for three weeks whilst the M62 will be shut over two full weekends. There will also be lane closures in place at other times and rail disruption as part of the £20 million project, bosses have warned.

Network Rail are replacing the bridge that takes trains over the motorway in Castleton. They say it will 'ensure safe and reliable journeys for passengers and freight over this vital structure for years to come.' As well as passenger trains, it is a key freight route across the Pennines carrying construction materials and several daily biomass services to Drax power station, near Selby in Yorkshire, which provides power to the national electricity grid.

A total of six percent of the country's energy supply is said to rely on the bridge for transportation. To complete the work, engineers need to dismantle the old bridge and take it away on the M62.
