Motorists are bracing for potential delays as National Highways announces a major overhaul of the M6 through Lune Gorge in Cumbria, with eight bridge deck structures set to be replaced.
This extensive renovation marks the first significant upgrade in 50 years for this stretch of motorway, which is a key route for Manchester drivers.
The project will focus on a six-mile section between junctions 37 and 38 at Tebay, where seven bridges support the M6 itself and an eighth carries the local A685 road over the motorway near Roundthwaite.
These structures vary in length from 46 metres to a substantial 142 metres and range in height from five to 17 metres. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2020, the Lune Gorge section's ageing bridges necessitate a comprehensive refurbishment plan, according to National Highways.
