Lucy Letby's defence team has revealed fresh evidence that they claim "significantly undermines" her convictions. The 34 year old ex-nurse is serving life behind bars after being found guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to kill seven more during her time in the neo-natal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital, reports the Mirror.Incarcerated at HMP Bronzefield, a high-security prison for women in Ashford, Surrey, she has consistently professed her innocence.
During a recent press briefing, her barrister Mark McDonald announced plans to urgently approach the Court of Appeal with a proposal to reopen Letby's case and re-examine all the convictions against her.
McDonald detailed how an expert, who had previously confirmed the cause of death for three of the babies, has now altered their position.Describing the legal journey, Mr McDonald stated: "In August 2023 Lucy Letby was convicted in the Crown Court at Manchester after a trial lasting over 10 months of 7 counts of murder and 7 counts of attempted murder.
On 24 May 2024, the matter was before the Court of Appeal where all applications for leave to appeal were refused." He went on to discuss the previous appeals which focused on the testimony of the prosecution’s leading expert, Dr Dewi Evans, saying: "The primary ground of appeal at the previous hearings related to the admissibility before the jury of the evidence of the lead prosecution expert Dr Dewi Evans.
