Grandad Tommy Gilmour cheated death twice before picking up the nest egg. The 71-year-old was hit by a bus in December last year and the watch he was wearing saved his arm from being ripped off.

Just two years earlier he was left in a coma after complications during neck surgery. Tommy – who shares three children and five grandchildren with wife Maureen, 68 – said the couple are planning on spending their winnings on a new automatic car, a trip abroad and a surprise for their family. He said: "It's a tremendous win, I can't believe it.

It's nice to share it with so many others in the street."We've been looking at getting another car. There will be a family holiday coming up too."And he joked that wife Maureen is terrified of what might happen to him next.
