famously skilled at directing kids in movies. But a new video that’s surfaced puts the Hollywood heavyweight’s own childlike energy on display.A decades-old clip posted this week on Twitter shows the “E.T.” filmmaker playing a massive prank on “Goonies” director Richard Donner, back in 1985.
Spielberg, of course, devised the story for the classic family movie about a group of scamps living in Astoria, Ore., who head out on a perilous adventure.According to Twitter user @Todd_Spence, after “Goonies” wrapped in ‘85, the exhausted Donner headed to Hawaii for a much needed break from work.
But Spielberg wouldn’t let him have a moment’s rest. The mischief-maker, then about 39 years old, flew the child cast of future stars out to the Aloha State to surprise their director and filmed the big reveal.
The jet-setting actors included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton and Jeff Cohen. The actors who played the Fratelli family — Anne Ramsey, Robert Davi and Joe Pantoliano — also made the trek.The plot worked.
