London Mayor Sadiq Khan has wasted no time in renewing his row with Donald Trump. Just moments after securing a sweeping victory over Kamala Harris in the U.S.

election, Khan declined to fall in line with other world leaders in congratulating Trump. Instead, the Labour politician put into writing why he considers that Londoners have values that are the antithesis of Trump’s policies. “An important reminder today for Londoners: our city is—and will always be—for everyone,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “We will always be pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights.” Khan added: “These are some of the values that will continue to bind us together as Londoners.” The message contrasted with the tone of Keir Starmer, the UK prime minister and leader of the Labour Party. “I look forward to working with you in the years ahead,” said Starmer. “As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.” Khan and Trump have history.

Khan did not want Trump to win the 2016 election and said the former president’s views on Islam were “ignorant.” Trump challenged Khan to an IQ test and said he would remember the barbs.

He remained true to his work and, during his first term in the White House, Trump repeatedly attacked Khan’s record on terrorism and compared London to “a war zone.” During the former president’s UK visit in 2018, Khan permitted protesters to fly a giant inflatable “Trump baby” blimp in the city.
