Livingston boss David Martindale jokes that new coach Brian Rice must sleep at the Tony Macaroni Arena – because he puts so many hours into the club.The 60-year-old left his position as Alloa Athletic manager to take a coaching role at the Premiership club and the gaffer has heaped praise on the new arrival’s work ethic and admits he’s been a huge positive for the club.Rice, from Whitburn, also has a huge amount of experience in the game with a playing career that included a decade spent in the top flights in England and Scotland before embarking on a lengthy coaching career that has seen stints at Hibs and Dundee United before taking managerial roles at Hamilton and Alloa.And Martindale confessed it would be ‘weak’ not to lean on that experience.He said: “I brought him in for a variety of reasons.
I was missing a coach first and foremost. It was just me, Neil (Hastings) and big Stretch (Gary Maley), although he is different because he’s the goalie coach and they get paid for nothing.
Those guys have three players to coach.“So it was Neil and I taking training, taking reserve games and I felt we spread ourselves a wee bit thin.
So Chipper coming in brought experience into the building, a new voice into the changing room, and a friend in for the players.
