An angry mum says safety should be schools' top concern not the colour of pupils' hair after having to take her son home because of his new pink lockdown look.

Billy Chapman, 14, was told his fresh style wasn't fitting after turning up at Writhlington School in Radstock, Somerset. His mum Emma says he dyed his hair when school was closed as a ‘pick me up’ after a difficult summer.

She says it is only "vaguely pink" - and complained he wouldn't have been punished if he bleached it blonde, reports SomersetLive.

But the school say he has not been formally excluded. At 9.15am on Friday the mum received a phone call from the school asking her to come in to discuss her son's new hairstyle because it broke school rules.
