Liverpool could be forced to pay both Marko Grujic and Xherdan Shaqiri their full wages until at least January, even though only one of them can play for the Reds in the Premier League.
Serbian midfielder Grujic saw his move to Werder Bremen break down on transfer deadline day, with the Reds hoping to raise around £20million for a player who has spent the last two seasons on loan in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin.
Werder were hoping for a loan deal of their own, but the Reds had aimed to help balance their books with the permanent sale of the 24-year-old midfielder who has played just 16 times for the club since he became Jurgen Klopp's first Liverpool signing in January 2016.
