From ‘Old Town Road‘ to Beverly Hills Cop, it seems Lil Nas X is coming for all of the Village People’s jobs. The Grammy Award winner released his latest track ‘Here We Go!‘ on Friday, a theme song for the upcoming Netflix sequel Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which premieres Wednesday on the streaming platform.
His song features the instantly recognizable electronic riff from the original 1984 movie’s theme by Harold Faltermeyer. The soundtrack won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
Lil Nas X previously admitted that his first time hearing the Beverly Hills Cop theme was in a Family Guy episode as he sat down with Axel F stars Eddie Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige for an interview with Netflix. “It’s Peter Griffin from Family Guy,” he said in the conversation. “He was doing the hum to it and I was like, ‘Wait, that was actually a good little melody from Family Guy.’ And then I saw the movie years later.” Murphy then pointed out that the 25-year-old musician “wasn’t even born in 1984. … You weren’t even thought about yet.
You weren’t even a little glint in your dad’s eye yet in 1984.” Lil Nas X said the experience recording the theme song was “actually kind of insane,” adding, “I was a bit emotional.
