For fans of the hit BBC crime series Life on Mars, it'll be hard to believe the show first aired nearly twenty years ago. The show—set and filmed in Manchester, Salford, Stockport, and Bolton—focused on Greater Manchester Police detective DCI Sam Tyler (John Simm), who wakes up after a car crash in 1973.
Alongside Philip Glenister (Gene Hunt), the iconic duo solved crimes. All the while, Sam attempted to unravel the mystery of what had happened to him.
The show achieved the rare feat of becoming hugely successful with audiences and critics while becoming a cult classic. The show's first series aired on BBC One in January 2006, nearly two decades ago.
Life on Mars even spawned a sequel, Ashes to Ashes, and US and South Korean versions of the show. To this day, the show's cult following sees fans asking for a third series and taking pilgrimages to the many locations around Greater Manchester where it was filmed.
