Nearly four months after the tragic death of One Direction star Liam Payne in Buenos Aires, Argentina, his former fiancee Maya Henry has opened up about their relationship and the profound impact his passing has had on her.
Maya, 25, had an on-off relationship with Liam from 2018 to 2022, with the pair engaged at one point. Now, in a statement to Rolling Stone, Maya has opened up on their relationship and what led to their eventual separation. "While I loved him deeply, he did things that hurt me in ways I'll never fully understand, and he continued to hurt me years after we broke up," she shared with the magazine on Tuesday. "On drugs, he became someone unrecognisable -- so different from his sober self." "I kept hoping each incident would be a wake-up call for him to get help, but it never was.
I tried to be there for him. I loved him so much that I convinced myself I could fix things." Maya said she stood by Liam "in his darkest moments," albeit without success. "Initially, it was the drug use and addictions that tore us apart," she elaborated, reports the Mirror. "Anyone who has been with an addict understands how difficult that is." Opening up about her efforts to support Liam, Maya confessed that she had thought she could "fix things" and believed that if she held on, she could bring about change.
She said this often meant “ignoring every red flag” and putting herself in “unsafe” situations. The pair eventually split, with Maya now sharing how difficult she found the breakup. "The love I gave, the sacrifices I made -- they weren't enough because they never could be," she shared.
