The town still has the highest infection rate in the country with 228.5 cases per 100,000 people in the week ending May 10. The surge in cases is thought to be driven by the B.1.617.2 strain of the virus, often called the Indian variant.
Bolton's week-on-week trend is up by a huge 158 per cent, according to the latest Public Health England figures. There were 657 positive Covid-19 tests across the borough in the week ending May 10, which is 402 more than the previous seven days.
