Last day for late self-assessment tax payers to submit return and avoid up to £900 fine

Late tax return filers are being urged to submit their form by the end of today to avoid extra fines of up to £900. The deadline for filing your self-assessment tax return online has already passed, with fines of £100 being issued as a penalty.

But if you file your tax return three months late, further fines of £10 a day are applied, up to a maximum of £900. The cut-off for submitting your tax return is normally January 31 but HMRC had given people more time due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, Brits had until February 28 to file their tax return without incurring the usual £100 penalty - although interest worth 2.6% of the outstanding amount was still charged.
