Lanarkshire man jailed after trying to choke police officer

A man tried to choke a police officer as he was being arrested following a domestic disturbance.Paul Martin, 38, was jailed for 14 months when he appeared from custody at Hamilton Sheriff Court.He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at his partner's home in Hamilton, on August 22.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

A witness saw his Range Rover drive on to a grass area and thought he was going to crash into the house.Martin got out of the vehicle and banged on the house door and windows, demanding entry.He appeared to be under the influence and was aggressive towards the woman.The police were called and she told officers she wanted Martin to leave.Alice Carey, prosecuting, said: "He was handcuffed but freed his left hand, grabbed one of the officers in a headlock and tried to choke him."During a struggle both fell to the floor.

The officer's colleague tried to pull Martin off and he pushed his elbow into her body."Defence agent Elspeth Forrest said the woman has stated she wishes to get back together with Martin, an electrician, when he is released
