Lanarkshire man admits setting fire to a house in Shotts and causing £40,000 worth of damage

A man put neighbours' lives in danger and caused more than £40,000 of damage after setting fire to a mattress.Kieran Couston was pulled from the blazing house by a neighbour, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard on Friday.Couston, 33, of Banavie Road, Newmains, admitted wilfully starting the fire at a terraced house in Kames Road, Shotts, on December 8, 2021.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

The accused said a mattress was on fire."The neighbour removed him from the house. The accused was not making sense but it was confirmed there was no one else in the house."Firefighters arrived and found the accused to be acting erratically.

He gave an inconsistent version of events."He was unable to account for a minor burn on his hand."Investigators concluded the fire had been started deliberately in an upstairs bedroom.
