A Lanarkshire joiner has been jailed for 16 months for sexual and physical assaults on a woman. Stephen Nailen blamed the death of his father and subsequent abuse of alcohol and cocaine for his criminal behaviour.

Nailen, of Kildonan Place, Motherwell, was convicted of sexual assault, a course of abusive conduct and threatening or abusive behaviour.

Defence advocate Graham Robertson said his client had been remanded in custody in March to await sentence and had time to reflect.He now "fully accepts" his guilt and "seems to display genuine insight and empathy towards the complainer".Mr Robertson told the court: "In 2017 his father, whom he was very close to, passed away."Mr Nailen dealt with this by increasing his consumption of alcohol and cocaine."That is not put forward as an excuse but as background to his offending behaviour."He'd never been in custody before and has found his time on remand very upsetting."The court heard Nailen employs five men in his joinery business and Mr Robertson urged Sheriff John Hamilton to impose a period of supervision to allow him to return to work.The advocate added: "He would
