New fire alarm legislation which comes into effect on Tuesday has been criticised by North Lanarkshire councillors. From February 1, every home in Scotland is required to have interlinked and ceiling-mounted smoke alarms, in both the most-used space – usually the living room – and circulation areas on each storey, plus a kitchen heat alarm and carbon monoxide detector for appliances such as boilers.Conservative politicians in North Lanarkshire are calling for a further postponement to the scheme, saying many homeowners are “still completely unaware of the changes”; while the council’s Labour administration say the rollout is “nothing less than a shambles”.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Housing secretary Shona Robison last week told MSPs: “Having considered the balance of risks, I am clear that it is not right to delay legislation designed to protect and save lives – the improved standards will reduce the risk of injury and death from house fires.”Now councillors say they are receiving complaints and concerns from constituents ahead of the deadline and that homeowners are having difficulty in accessing the £220 equipment and arranging its installation.
