Labour has warned of a 'challenging' winter ahead in the NHS - even if they win the general election next week. But shadow health secretary Wes Streeting has promised that 40,000 extra appointments will be available 'well within a year' of a Labour government.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Mr Streeting said that Labour will 'hit the ground running' if they win, but warned that the party cannot 'fix all of the problems' in the next six months.
It comes as the NHS is set for another difficult winter when demand rises. Mr Streeting said Labour would cut through 'red tape' that ties up GPs and stops them spending as much time with patients, arguing this could make 'quite a big difference' quickly.
He told the M.E.N. he hopes patients feel the NHS is 'really improving' within five years.
