Labour MP Nadia Whittome sacked as carer for speaking out about PPE shortages

A Labour MP who returned to work as a carer for the elderly to help in the coronavirus pandemic says she has been axed for speaking out about the lack of PPE.

Nadia Whittome had been working at Lark Hill retirement village for almost a month. But Extra Care charitable Trust, which runs the site in Nottingham, told her on Tuesday she had to go because of her comments.

Ms Whittome, 23, who has never blamed the company for the lack of PPE, said she was “appalled”. But the Nottingham East MP added it was her “duty to be honest about the lack of PPE and testing,” which is putting “lives at risk.” “For so many in social care, who work for poverty pay, speaking out is not an option.
