A knifeman lured his friend to a shop before cutting his throat and leaving him fighting for his life. Rashid Mahmood, 37, attacked his 25-year-old victim at Ismail Groceries on Stamford Road in Longsight.
The pair had known each other as Mahmood would hang around the shop and the victim previously worked at the shop, which has since changed its name.
There had been no previous issues between them, but he was aware Mahmood had mental health problems and could be 'unpredictable', Manchester Crown Court heard.
Mahmood had called the victim and asked for him to come to the shop. At first he refused, but then agreed and arrived with some friends in the afternoon on Saturday, January 30 last year.
