Kilmarnock man devises William Wallace approach to protest new matchday parking restrictions

A Kilmarnock man has adopted William Wallace's famous freedom speech to embark on a crusade of his own.Neil Carlton has waged a war of words against parking restrictions brought in to address traffic issues on Kilmarnock FC Saturday match days.The Rugby Road resident wants locals to be issued with residents' parking permits instead of the blanket ban on all vehicles that was introduced.Neil has continued to park outside his house on match days with a protest notice on his windscreen.

But now he's been slapped with a penalty notice.The protest notice stated: "This vehicle belongs to Neil Carlton of 23 Rugby Road Kilmarnock KAI 2DQ."I respectfully request a Resident's Parking Permit to use on match days when the new restrictions apply."To slightly misquote Sir William Wallace, 'You may take our lives, but you will never take our parking spaces!'”The restrictions have been introduced in the form of single yellow lines with supporting signage to denote part-time restrictions, and in some locations new double yellow lines marking permanent full-time restrictions, mainly around junctions to improve overall safety.The part-time restrictions come into force from 11am to 5pm on match days.

Ayrshire Road Alliance advised residents to remove their vehicles at least 90 minutes before the game and not return until at least 60 minutes after a match finishes.Neil Carlton moved to Rugby Road in 1990 and has been parking his vehicle directly outside his house, with no impact on anyone else, but now he as well as his neighbours find themselves penalised for doing so.The irked local has escalated the issue and is currently awaiting a hearing with the Transport Tribunal Appeal.Neil's notice had been displayed on his windscreen on four
