Kate Garraway says Covid must've had an impact on Derek's 'mind and anxiety'

Kate Garraway has opened up on her husband Derek Draper's mental health as he continues to suffer from the long-term impacts of Covid-19.

Derek, 54, returned home in April 2021 after spending a year in hospital fighting for his life after contracting coronavirus in 2020, which has since left him battling a number of ongoing health issues.

Speaking to co-host Ben Shephard, 47, and Dr Hilary Jones, 68, on Good Morning Britain on Thursday 17 February, the star explained that Derek is still "terribly affected by Covid".TV presenter Kate, 54, explained that the deadly bug "undoubtedly had an affect on certainly brain connections." Get exclusive celebrity stories and fabulous photoshoots straight to your inbox with OK!'s daily newsletter When Ben questioned: "So not just physical wellbeing but mental wellbeing as well?" she responded: "I don't know about mental wellbeing if I'm absolutely honest because he's still so affected in terms of communication and ability that I wouldn't feel qualified to say whether it had had an impact in terms of depression and anxiety." However, Kate went on to share that she believes it would be difficult for Derek's "extreme" case of Covid to not have an impact on his mental health as he struggles to communicate.The star, who recently said she loves her husband in a "new way" now, continued: "I mean it must be, I would have thought. "Because if you are still unable to communicate and very challenged mobility wise and lung and all the other things then that's going to affect the mind and anxiety." She added: "But I find it's very interesting that we're now – and you and I have talked about this a lot Dr Hillary – everything was very much focused on the lungs and then people were understanding.
