But away from the tough scenes there were also glimpses of the couple's incredible love for one another, with Kate promising she would "save" him and Derek telling her how much he loved her.
There was also video footage from the couple's wedding, which saw them gaze into each others eyes and beam. Derek has been left with multiple health issues and remains in hospital, despite being covid free.
But Kate has adapted their home in London to enable him to come home when he's slightly better, proving her unshakeable love for him.
