Kate Garraway has opened up about the debts she now faces following the death of her husband Derek Draper. The Good Morning Britain presenter’s husband died in January after becoming seriously ill with Covid-19 in March 2020.
Derek subsequently spent 100 days in a coma and required round-the-clock care and treatment until his death. In December 2023, the former political adviser suffered complications following a cardiac arrest and on 5 January, Kate shared the heartbreaking news that her “darling husband” had passed away.
And now, 56 year old Kate has spoken about the financial cost of caring for a loved one, with the TV personality estimating that her debts are around £500,000 to £800,000. “It’s supposed to be a system that’s meant to catch you if you fall,” she told The Times. “But actually, it feels like it’s trying to catch you out.
You feel like you’re in the dock answering questions about things that will literally mean life or death to someone you love.” She continued: “Derek’s needs were clearly so great, yet he didn’t warrant funded care – so you think, ‘If he isn’t getting it, then who is?’” The mum-of-two’s admission comes ahead of her new documentary Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story, which is set to air on ITV and ITVX on Tuesday, 26 March.
