The jury in the Lindsay Birbeck murder trial has been discharged and a retrial has been set for later this year. A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was on trial at Preston Crown Court following the death of the Accrington teaching assistant.

The prosecution alleged that he killed 47-year-old Ms Birbeck before moving her body to a cemetery in a wheelie bin. Today, the jury of 11 women and one man were discharged by trial judge Mrs Justice Yip for legal reasons, nearly two weeks after the trial was opened.

A retrial has been set for June 15 and is scheduled to last two to three weeks. Ms Birbeck, a mother of two, was last seen alive near her Accrington home on August 12 last year.
