The move would serve as a stop-gap until they can launch a fresh attempt to prize Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund next summer.
But Dembele could also turn out to be a star performance at Old Trafford if Ed Woodward can pull off a move. And both Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and former Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez are in full agreement over Dembele’s quality.
Klopp and the Reds were heavily linked with a move for Dembele before he ended up making the big-money move to the Nou Camp.
