A judge issued a stark warning to abusers after a man narrowly avoided jail for beating his ex-partner in an ‘appalling fashion’.

Anthony Broomhead, 34, erupted at his ex-partner, with whom he had been in a long term relationship. The pair had split up after the relationship became ‘turbulent and abusive’, Manchester Crown Court heard.

After an argument in which Broomhead, of Ashton-under-Lyne, assumed she was ‘sexting’ another man, he launched a violent attack on her, punching her repeatedly, forcing her into a headlock and strangling her.

The next morning he continued with the abuse to the point she nearly lost consciousness. He later left, taking her car without her consent, before he was arrested.
