Josh Welsh, Film Independent President and Champion of Filmmakers, Dies

Pat Saperstein Deputy Editor Josh Welsh, longtime president of Film Independent, died Dec. 31 after a five-year battle with colon cancer.

His age was not immediately available. Welsh started out as an actor and started volunteering at the Film Independent Spirit Awards annually starting in 1996.

He joined the Film Independent staff over 20 years ago, becoming president in 2012. He oversaw all programs and operations for the nonprofit, growing the organization’s staff, budget, programming slate and membership. “We are devastated by the loss of Josh Welsh,” said Film Independent Board Chair Brenda Robinson. “Josh was a tireless champion of independent voices, a trusted arts leader and a cherished colleague and friend.

The work we do at Film Independent has never been more necessary and we will honor his legacy by continuing to build on the foundation he established.
