John McEnroe responds to Nick Kyrgios' retirement hint with public 'begging' plea

Nick Kyrgios hinted that he could retire at the conclusion of the US Open. The world No 25 sent defending champion Danii Medvedev packing in a statement 7-6(11) 3-6 6-3 6-2 victory in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday night, and the retired American admitted he had been "begging" Kyrgios to return to his Laver Cup team this month.

Kyrgios produced one of the most impressive performances of his career to oust Medvedev from the US Open in the fourth round.

It was his second win over the world No 1 in under a month and cemented his place as one of the favourites to win his maiden Grand Slam title at the end of the week.

But shortly after booking his spot in a first-ever US Open quarter-final, the 27-year-old hinted that he could retire at the end of the tournament as he set his sights on winning the title as he said: "Three more matches potentially, then we never have to play tennis again. " Kyrgios' comment has left many questioning whether he will soon be retiring but his former Laver Cup captain is hoping he won't call it quits after finally fulfilling his potential.
