Jimmy Kimmel has released a statement apologising for the 'embarrassing' use of blackface in some of his old comedy sketches.

The US chat show host said at the time he 'thought of them as impersonations of celebrities' but now wanted to say sorry to those who were 'genuinely hurt or offended' by the makeup he wore and words he spoke.

During his time on Comedy Central's The Man Show, between 1993 and 2003, Kimmel impersonated NBA star Karl Malone. In a statement today, he said he had 'evolved and matured' since those times. "I have long been reluctant to address this, as I knew doing so would be celebrated as a victory by those who equate apologies with weakness and cheer for leaders who use prejudice to divide us.
