Les Ferdinand was delighted to see pal Jermain Defoe handed the chance to kick off his coaching career at Rangers. But the ex-Premier League star fears his old strike partner will become the latest high-profile black candidate to discover opportunity does not always knock down south.

Defoe has called it quits at Ibrox six months after being promoted to Steven Gerrard ’s backroom team as a player-coach. New manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s arrival spelled the end of that arrangement but Defoe has already clarified it was his decision to leave the coaches office and return full-time to the first-team dressing room as he opted to pile his focus back on to playing duties.And it was a lack of action that ultimately persuaded the former West Ham, Spurs and England poacher it was time to move on.
