ITV has officially scrapped Jeremy Clarkson as the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire – in the wake of comments he made regarding the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle earlier this year. The network’s boss Carolyn McCall has now confirmed the forthcoming season of the popular quiz show, which is currently in production, will be the final series to be hosted by the former Top Gear star. “We have a contract.
We’re contracted to this [season], so we will do that,” said McCall. “And then we have no future commitments.” The Grand Tour presenter was at the centre of a huge backlash earlier this year after controversial comments he made in a column in The Sun calling for Meghan to be forced to parade the streets naked with "lumps of excrement thrown at her".
The highly controversial column received widespread criticism from both the public and journalists alike, with the star now under investigation by British media regulator IPSO in wake of his comments.
Carolyn confirmed the decision to axe Clarkson as the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire host in an interview as she was being honoured as Variety’s International Media Woman of the Year, where she also highlighted the broadcaster’s "quick response" to Jeremy’s column.
