Jenna Coleman has played a wide variety of characters over the past 20 years – from The Doctor’s companion in Doctor Who to Queen Victoria in Victoria and a serial killer’s girlfriend in The Serpent.
Now, she’s switching things up once again, taking on the role of detective. The actor, 38, stars in BBC One’s upcoming four-part series The Jetty as Ember Manning – a detective and mum who begins to discover her late husband’s mysterious past when investigating a decades-old missing person case.
Ember being Jenna’s first-ever detective role is no accident, with the BBC star admitting that she’s avoided detective dramas throughout her career. “My reluctance in the past, as much as I love detective thrillers, has been where you become a vehicle with which to turn the cogs of the story,” she explained. “Whereas for me, I felt I knew who Ember was as a human from the first page.
It felt like a human and emotional story as much as a detective thriller – the two co-exist together.That completely hooked me and also the beauty, the themes, the waters of conscious trauma, blurred boundaries, memories.
