Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling has questioned whether there may be ulterior motives behind Manchester United's talks with Newcastle United over a loan move for Jesse Lingard.

The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer and this month has presented the only opportunity for the Reds to earn a sum of money for the England international before he becomes available as a free agent.

Prior to Steve Bruce's sacking, the Magpies finally saw a change of owners as Mike Ashley handed over the club to a Saudi-led consortium which made the Toon Army the richest club in the world.

Eddie Howe's side are battling relegation and have eyed Lingard as an attacking addition in their bid for safety. "He [Lingard] looked like he was going to be on his way there," Stelling said on Saturday. "Then, Manchester United reportedly asked for a £12million survival payment on top of a loan fee of £12.5million, plus his wages of £100k-a-week. "Is that United saying to the football world ‘actually we hope Newcastle go down because they could be a threat to us in the next season or two seasons?" The Manchester Evening News reported earlier this week that the handling of Newcastle's interest has caused a strain in the relationship between the club and the player's camp, who are 'incensed' by United's behaviour.
