Traffic crawled along the treacherous mountain road that snakes through the Rural Parc de Teno. It's usually a popular spot for tourists, but early this afternoon (July 15) the area surrounding Masca was heaving.

Coach after coach made its way along the winding road, holding up cars along its hairpin bends and forcing passing vehicles to edge as close as possible to the rock formations at the side.

It's all part of the peak summer season for people flocking to this corner of Tenerife. But for four weeks, a shadow has lurked over Tenerife - one that European tourists making their way up the road by bus have avoided.
