Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville both feel the Premier League should reject the option of keeping five substitutions for the 2020/21 season.
IFAB announced on Wednesday they will permit the rule to remain in place for next season after its successful implementation following the coronavirus outbreak.
The rule was amended with player safety in mind as they returned to congested fixture schedules after months without action.
The Premier League do not have to continue with the rule beyond the end of this season though, and Sky Sports pundits Carragher and Neville have urged them to revert to the old system.
