James Forrest walked into the Stadio Olimpico last night with a headful of jubilant memories from Celtic’s stunning Europa League victory here in 2019.Unfortunately when he left it was the all-too familiar feeling of a Champions League blow to the gut that took his breath away.
Another late sucker punch. Another close but no cigar evening just like when the Serie A giants visited Glasgow last month. Another ‘what if’ 90 minutes.Forrest though admits there are no excuses after the Hoops exited Europe with a whimper.
It was a different story four years ago when his goal and Olivier Ntcham’s last gasp winner dumped Simone Inzaghi’s side from the second tier competition.
Forrest was one of only two survivors from that night along with skipper Callum McGregor.Just like personnel much has changed for the Hoops’ European exploits in that time.
