The trio were left to battle it out on the ice after last-minute drama saw Greg Rutherford have to withdraw from the competition hours beforehand due to a "significant injury" during rehearsals.
As the saying goes, the show must go on, and the three finalists and their professional skating partners each performed a routine that they hoped would see them lift the trophy at the end of the night.
But when the voting lines closed an hour into the show for the first time, the third-place couple was announced as former BBC Radio 1 DJ Adele and skating partner Mark Hanretty.
