The sun was shining and Manchester city centre was beginning to fill up with shoppers and workers. That afternoon, England were getting ready to play Scotland in a European Championship group match at Wembley.

Football fans were also in town for the next day's Russia and Germany game at Old Trafford. Just before 9.20am on June 15, 1996, two men in cagoules and sunglasses parked a Ford Cargo van on double yellow lines outside Marks and Spencer on the corner of Cannon Street and Corporation Street.
