Independence activists have owned up to the defacing of road signs in Welsh towns. Recently, a spate of English place names were covered with spray paint on bilingual signs.

The vandals focused on Anglicised names such as "St Asaph", "Ruthin", and "Denbigh", revealing only the indigenous Welsh names Llanelwy, Rhuthun, and Dinbych.

One sign was tagged with the emblem of the Free Wales Armya group, which has been advocating for Welsh nationalism since 1963 while another was slapped with a sticker saying "Ble mae'r Gymraeg? " which means, Where is the Welsh?
