The man behind Freckfest charity has been honoured with a British Empire Medal for services to volunteering. Craig Smart, 54, will be presented with his medal in a short formal ceremony at Irvine's Harbour Arts Centre on Saturday, March 22.

Craig, who is from Irvine, came up with the idea for the festival back in 2013 after Mr Entertainment Willie Freckleton passed away.

At the time it was supposed to be a one-off event honouring Willie, who was the entertainment chief at the former Magnum Leisure Centre in Irvine and for many years brought entertainment and good music to the people of Irvine.

In August 2013, a group of highly-motivated music fans promoted a weekend festival, Freckfest, held in Willie’s name. Following a huge success, a weekend festival turned into monthly shows and later weekly shows at the Harbour Arts Centre.
